Hollywood Theatre
Restoring the Classics - and the Codebase
The Hollywood Theatre is a nonprofit cultural institution in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to entertaining, inspiring, and connecting the community through film—while preserving its namesake historic cinema. Over time, however, its website was no longer keeping pace with the theater’s growing role in the community. Users faced confusing navigation, mobile responsiveness issues, and a clunky ticketing flow. Behind the scenes, staff struggled with a Wagtail CMS backend that was difficult to manage and inflexible to the organization’s evolving needs.
Gecko stepped in to redesign the site from the ground up, migrating it to WordPress to give staff full control over content updates without developer support while tackling the challenge of integrating Agile Ticketing, a powerful backend system with limited frontend flexibility. By engineering a custom solution that delayed the handoff to Agile until the final checkout step, our team created a smooth, branded ticketing experience that felt cohesive from start to finish. The result is a redesigned site that reflects the energy and community spirit of the Hollywood Theatre, built with mobile-first design, accessibility best practices, and intuitive navigation at its core.
"I really had a great time working with Gecko and their team - I can’t wait to visit Montana so we can meet in person”
