Deep Ocean Education Project
A Sea of Knowledge, All In One Place
The Deep Ocean Education Project is a collaboration among NOAA Ocean Exploration, Ocean Exploration Trust, and Schmidt Ocean Institute. This digital platform serves as a centralized, searchable resource hub for educators, students, and the public, combining lesson plans, multimedia content, live expedition data, and real-time ship trackers.
Three partner organizations brought deep, valuable content—but spread across disconnected systems that made holistic exploration difficult. Gecko unified these resources into a custom WordPress platform that supports multiple audiences and shared content management. The site features intuitive navigation, powerful filtering, and custom collections that allow educators to easily find and save lesson plans, activities, and articles. Built with accessibility and responsive design at its core, the platform has been widely praised across the education sector, including recognition at the 2023 National Science Teaching Association conference as a standout tool for ocean science education.
